  23. Microglia are the immune cells of the central nervous system. A subpopulation, satellite microglia,
  24. form direct contact of their cell body to a neuron cell body. This particular neuron-glia interaction
  25. may have implications for neuron function. To understand what factors determine satellite microglia
  26. formation we performed a morphological analysis of adult mouse brains and retinae. Satellite microglia
  27. occur in all areas containing neuron somata, and their frequency is determined by the soma density
  28. of neurons in a given brain region whereas a preference to form a satellite with neurons of a specific
  29. neurotransmitter subtype was not observed."
