Alternative options are - github + OSF (see [datalad-osf](http://docs.datalad.org/projects/osf/en/stable/index.html)) - github + another special remote (see [datalad list of special remotes](https://git-annex.branchable.com/special_remotes/)) - different proposals? These approaches would make accessing the data more complicated, as two services are involved, that both might require authentication to retrieve the data, e.g see [datalad-osf example](http://docs.datalad.org/projects/osf/en/stable/tutorial/authentication.html)

Is there a pressing need for this? Are there features of newer git-annex we want to leverage or is a component of our pipeline dropping support for older versions?

It's not pressing for any of the projects I am aware of. However, there might be other projects around using this repository here that might have different requirements. This would be the time to speak up :)
